IPL stands for Intense pulsed light (IPL) technology (aka fotofacial) and it improves the appearance of sun-damaged skin by removing brown and red spots.  IPL treatments are ideal for patients with active lifestyles (surfing, hiking, beach volleyball, bike riding, jogging, outdoor sports) because the procedure requires minimal downtime, is not very painful, and has a very low risk of side effects.

These gentle, non-ablative treatments use broad spectrum light to treat the face, chest, neck and hands—virtually anywhere that sun damage shows.

Think IPL sounds good and want to know how it works?

A broad spectrum of light is transmitted through a small, smooth, transparent hand piece which is gently placed over the skin. Cut-off filters in the hand piece change the wavelength range allowing it to be optimized for different applications and skin types. Filtered light interacts and heats melanin particles (brown pigment) and blood cells causing them to be removed. Removal of brown spots and red spots results in a more youthful appearance ( and that is what we all want ).

IPL FAQs

What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light (IPL), also known as fotofacial, is a skin laser treatment that delivers high-intensity pulses of light that penetrate the skin and heat the sub-surface layers to reduce melanin, the dark pigment in skin, or hemoglobin, the red blood cells in blood vessels. This results in healthier, smoother and more even looking skin.

How many IPL treatments will I need?

The number of IPL treatments you need will depend on the condition of your skin and your desired results. Generally, patients need a series of 3-6 treatments, 4-8 weeks apart.

How long do IPL treatments sessions take?

Treatments generally last about 30-45 minutes. The amount of time the session takes will depend on the size and the number of areas you are having treated.

Do IPL treatments hurt?

Most patients describe the pain level as moderate. The patient can apply a topical numbing cream 30 minutes before the treatment to reduce any discomfort. Additionally, a cooling gel is applied to the skin’s surface to decrease discomfort.

What can I expect after an IPL treatment?

There is very little down time after an IPL (aka fotofacial) treatment. You may return to work or your normal daily activities the same day as your treatment.  If your skin is red after the treatment, you may apply makeup to cover it up. You can expect the pigment that is treated to get a little darker and flake off within one week. IPL is a great treatment if you don’t have time to spare after the procedure.

How long do IPL results last?

The results of IPL are long lasting. During your consultation, our providers will discuss a proper skin care regimen with you so that you can maintain your results for as long as possible. The better you take care of your skin, the longer your IPL results will last. Many patients come back annually for touchup treatments to maintain youthful looking skin.

What are the side effects of IPL?

IPL has a strong track record for safety. However, possible side effects may include swelling and redness for a few hours following the treatment.

How much does IPL cost?

An estimated cost would be $400 for the face and $700 for the face, neck and chest.  However, IPL treatment cost is different for each patient depending on the condition being treated, the areas to be treated and the desired outcome.  During a consultation, one of our providers will develop a personalized IPL treatment plan, including cost.
